We are sending out this message today to clarify recent events at our schools. The safety of all students and staff is of the utmost importance to the North Bend School District. Please know that if there is ever a threat or immediate danger in our schools, we would communicate information immediately.
Over the past few weeks three unauthorized individuals entered our school buildings, each as isolated incidents. The North Bend Police Department determined there were no immediate threats and do not believe these individuals pose a threat to our schools. Due to the nature of ongoing law enforcement investigation, we strive to communicate with our students, staff, and parents when we have the right information.
Through investigation, it was identified that these individuals accessed school campuses through doors that were left propped open or unlocked. We believe some minor theft occurred such as empty beverage cans and items from the lost and found. Two of the three individuals have been contacted and trespassed from district property. The third person’s identity is unknown at this time.
Out of an abundance of caution we have alerted all of our school staff of this information and have instructed staff to be more diligent about keeping exterior doors closed and locked where possible, and maintaining safety protocols. This is our current practice at all campuses.
We conduct ongoing safety audits and assessments of our school campuses to identify short and long term solutions that need to be addressed. In addition, students and staff members train and participate in regular emergency safety drills. We will continue to partner with our law enforcement partners and school communities to mitigate future events such as these. In addition, the NBSD Board of Directors will be conducting a work session to review our current safety plans and protocols and to continue the conversation about school safety.
These incidents are still being investigated by the North Bend Police Department and we encourage anyone with information surrounding these events to contact the NBPD. We appreciate your partnership in keeping all North Bend school campuses a safe and healthy place to learn and grow.
