Curriculum Adoption

Update on K-5 Math Curriculum Adoption

We‌’re moving forward in the process of the adoption‌ Math curriculum for ‌Elementary (grades K-5). The district’s goal is to select a curriculum before the end of this school year. ‌Staff have reviewed state approved curriculums and narrowed the choice to Big Ideas - Oregon. We are now seeking public input on Big Ideas - Oregon (K-5) curriculum.  Sample copies are available to be reviewed at the district office. Materials can also be accessed using the following link, Big Ideas Math Materials. A link is attached for your input Math Curriculum Community Input/Review. Public input will be open March 20th to April 26, 2024, with the final recommendation for adoption being made to the school board at their normally scheduled May meeting. Implementation at the elementary level is expected to begin next school year, the fall of 2024.

The‌ ‌initial‌ ‌steps‌ of Math adoption ‌started ‌with‌ ‌the‌ Oregon‌ ‌Department‌ ‌of‌ ‌Education‌ ‌(ODE)‌ ‌working‌‌ through‌ ‌a‌ ‌process‌ ‌of‌ ‌reviewing‌ ‌materials‌ ‌to‌ ‌determine‌ ‌which‌ ‌programs‌ ‌meet‌ ‌the‌ ‌state‌ ‌criteria.‌ ‌The‌‌ process‌ ‌includes‌ ‌specific‌ ‌rules:‌ ‌alignment‌ ‌to‌ ‌the‌ ‌state‌ ‌board‌ ‌adopted‌ ‌standards,‌ ‌accessibility‌ ‌for‌ ‌all‌‌ students,‌ ‌criteria‌ ‌for‌ ‌state‌ ‌and‌ ‌local‌ ‌committees‌ ‌(more‌ ‌information‌ ‌is‌ ‌included‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ ‌link‌s ‌at‌ ‌the‌‌ bottom‌ ‌of‌ ‌this‌ ‌page).‌ ‌The‌ ‌adoption‌ ‌process‌ ‌is‌ ‌based‌ ‌on‌ ‌a‌ ‌seven‌ ‌year‌ ‌cycle,‌ ‌with‌ ‌the‌ ‌state‌ ‌standards‌‌ updated‌ ‌the‌ ‌year‌ ‌prior‌ ‌to‌ ‌the‌ ‌adoption.‌ ‌Per‌ ‌ODE’s‌ ‌published‌ ‌required‌ ‌criteria,‌ ‌“Instructional‌‌ materials‌ ‌used‌ ‌in‌ ‌Oregon’s‌ ‌classrooms‌ ‌need‌ ‌to‌ ‌reflect‌ ‌the‌ ‌most‌ ‌current‌ ‌information‌ ‌and‌ ‌research‌ ‌and‌‌ be‌ ‌aligned‌ ‌to‌ ‌academic‌ ‌content‌ ‌standards.‌ ‌To‌ ‌this‌ ‌end,‌ ‌these‌ ‌instructional‌ ‌materials‌ ‌are‌ ‌subject,‌ ‌by‌‌ law,‌ ‌to‌ ‌a‌ ‌review‌ ‌process‌ ‌and‌ ‌must‌ ‌meet‌ ‌established‌ ‌specifications‌ ‌and‌ ‌criteria‌ ‌in‌ ‌order‌ ‌to‌ ‌be‌‌ approved‌ ‌by‌ ‌the‌ ‌State‌ ‌Board‌ ‌of‌ ‌Education‌ ‌for‌ ‌use‌ ‌in‌ ‌classrooms.

Beginning Review for Secondary Science Curriculum Adoption

We have started initial conversations with the science departments at the secondary level regarding the adoption of new science curriculum materials and will have an updated adoption schedule shortly.

The‌ ‌initial‌ ‌steps‌ of Science adoption ‌are the same as the Math curriculum and started ‌with‌ ‌the‌ Oregon‌ ‌Department‌ ‌of‌ ‌Education‌ ‌(ODE)‌ ‌working‌‌ through‌ ‌a‌ ‌process‌ ‌of‌ ‌reviewing‌ ‌materials‌ ‌to‌ ‌determine‌ ‌which‌ ‌programs‌ ‌meet‌ ‌the‌ ‌state‌ ‌criteria.‌ ‌The‌‌ process‌ ‌includes‌ ‌specific‌ ‌rules:‌ ‌alignment‌ ‌to‌ ‌the‌ ‌state‌ ‌board‌ ‌adopted‌ ‌standards,‌ ‌accessibility‌ ‌for‌ ‌all‌‌ students,‌ ‌criteria‌ ‌for‌ ‌state‌ ‌and‌ ‌local‌ ‌committees‌ ‌(more‌ ‌information‌ ‌is‌ ‌included‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ ‌link‌s ‌at‌ ‌the‌‌ bottom‌ ‌of‌ ‌this‌ ‌page).‌ ‌The‌ ‌adoption‌ ‌process‌ ‌is‌ ‌based‌ ‌on‌ ‌a‌ ‌seven‌ ‌year‌ ‌cycle,‌ ‌with‌ ‌the‌ ‌state‌ ‌standards‌‌ updated‌ ‌the‌ ‌year‌ ‌prior‌ ‌to‌ ‌the‌ ‌adoption.‌ ‌Per‌ ‌ODE’s‌ ‌published‌ ‌required‌ ‌criteria,‌ ‌“Instructional‌‌ materials‌ ‌used‌ ‌in‌ ‌Oregon’s‌ ‌classrooms‌ ‌need‌ ‌to‌ ‌reflect‌ ‌the‌ ‌most‌ ‌current‌ ‌information‌ ‌and‌ ‌research‌ ‌and‌‌ be‌ ‌aligned‌ ‌to‌ ‌academic‌ ‌content‌ ‌standards.‌ ‌To‌ ‌this‌ ‌end,‌ ‌these‌ ‌instructional‌ ‌materials‌ ‌are‌ ‌subject,‌ ‌by‌‌ law,‌ ‌to‌ ‌a‌ ‌review‌ ‌process‌ ‌and‌ ‌must‌ ‌meet‌ ‌established‌ ‌specifications‌ ‌and‌ ‌criteria‌ ‌in‌ ‌order‌ ‌to‌ ‌be‌‌ approved‌ ‌by‌ ‌the‌ ‌State‌ ‌Board‌ ‌of‌ ‌Education‌ ‌for‌ ‌use‌ ‌in‌ ‌classrooms.
